Anyone else watching the Olympics?

Postby SoldierHawk on Tue 23 Feb 2010 12:47

I dunno about y'all, but I *love* the Olympics, especially winter! Hockey is easily my favorite sport to watch, along with figure skating, snowboarding and speed skating.

Thoughts so far...my very favorite moment has come in the men's figure skating competition, watching our own (USA) Evan Lysachek take the gold, and knock my least favorite skater ever--egotistical, nasty, and ugly-to-watch-skate Evgeny Plushenko (RUS) to silver. And little Diasuke Takahashi from Japan got bronze--that was a VERY pleasant surprise.

Apollo Ohno is doing great, naturally. I'd like to see him take a gold this games, but really, he has nothing left to prove--and if the entire Korean team is determined to not let him finish first at any point, he probably won't. He's still done an incredible job--as has Bodie Miller, who is MORE than making up for the fiasco and godawful performances he gave in Torino. And how about Lindsey Vonn?? And Shaun White of course, but his dominance was pretty much a given. The half pipe was more an anointment than a competition, but that was okay with me...anything to watch that man snowboard is ok with me.

The only time I ever find myself a little sad to see the US win is when our hockey team plays the Canadians. You have to understand, I love this country...but I also LOVE Canadian hockey. They grow up with it in their blood, and their players are some of the best and most exciting to watch in the world. And as guilty as I feel about it, I can't help but root for them to win the gold, especially in front of a home crowd like this. That said, if they can't do it (and they won't, unless they WAKE UP and start playing like we all know they can), then its USA all the way!

How about you? Any favorite sports/athletes/moments so far?

You know I probably should watch a little bit of the Olympics. There's some amazing athletes. I'm not much of a tv person at all though. I'm either gaming, or developing websites. I spend more time in front of a computer than I do a tv. I do like movies though.

Canada-U.S. hockey tickets going for sky-high prices

ANCOUVER (AP) -- It's hard to say if Olympic records are being set, but tickets for Sunday's Canada-U.S. gold medal hockey match may be the hottest in the history of Canadian sports.

On the official fan-to-fan resale Web site run by the Vancouver Organizing Committee, seats were being offered for several thousand dollars apiece.

On Craigslist, many of the tickets on sale were going for more than $4,000, and one seller was offering two "awesome seats" for $14,999 -- cash only.

Canada, playing before rabid fans in the nation that invented hockey, will be taking on a strong U.S. team that prevailed 5-3 when the two teams met in the preliminary round. Even before the Olympics started, Canadians were suggesting that anything less than a gold medal would be a devastating blow.

The game is expected to become the most-watched sports event ever in Canada, likely breaking the mark of 10.6 million TV viewers for the preliminary-round Canada-U.S. game.

Organizers were philosophical Saturday when asked about the high ticket prices.

"No one is being forced to buy tickets they don't want," said Mark Adams, a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee.
